Alex Y. Chang, M.D.
Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director
Prof Alex Chang is the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre, Singapore. He holds dual appointments, as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Medical Oncology in Singapore and Professor of Oncology at the Department of Oncology, the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Prof Chang comes to Singapore with more than 20 years of experience in cancer treatment and research, particularly in the areas of breast and lung cancer as well as new modality therapy.
He graduated from the National Taiwan University, School of Medicine, Taiwan, and subsequently underwent his internal medicine residency training at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. He subsequently completed a clinical fellowship at the Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center, University of Wisconsin, USA. Prior to his current position, Prof Chang was President/Director at the Upstate NY Cancer Research & Education Foundation, Rochester, New York, USA. From 1995 to 1996, he was Professor of Oncology in Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York, USA.
Prof Chang is affiliated with numerous professional organizations. Currently, he is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Association of Cancer Research.
Prof Chang is editor of Oncology and Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology, and also reviews clinical papers for numerous journals, including Oncology, Cancer, Journal of Clinical Oncology, International Journal of Interferon & Cytokines Research. He has published 96 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is a much sought-after speaker at national and international meetings.
David S. Ettinger, M.D.
Associate Medical Director
Dr. David Ettinger is the Alex Grass Professor of Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also a professor of medicine, otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, gynecologic and obstetrics, and radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences. He has been a faculty member at Johns Hopkins for over 30 years. Dr. Ettinger's research interests are in new drug development and innovative multidisciplinary treatment strategies in lung cancer and sarcomas.
He is a member of the board of directors of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) as well as a member of the NCCN Guidelines Steering Committee. In addition, he has been chairman of the NCCN non-small cell lung cancer practice guidelines panel, antiemetic practice guidelines panel, and occult primary tumor practice guidelines panel.
Dr. Ettinger is currently the Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre's Associate Medical Director.
Lavina D. Bharwani, M.D.
Consultant in Oncology
Dr. Lavina Bharwani has been a consultant with Johns Hopkins Singapore since September 1, 2006. Prior to joining Hopkins, Dr. Bharwani was an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in the USA.
She was trained in Internal Medicine as well as Hematology/Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and is American Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology. Dr. Bharwani comes to Singapore with extensive experience. Dr. Bharwani’s areas of interest include breast cancer, gynecologic and gastrointestinal malignancies.
Troy Sullivan, M.D.
Consultant in Internal Medicine
Dr. Troy Sullivan joins the Johns Hopkins faculty from private practice in the U.S.A. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan. Dr. Sullivan has been involved in the practice of Internal Medicine for ten years in California and Georgia. His focus is to develop general medical services and health screening program at Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre.
Gilberto de Lima Lopes, Jr., M.D.

Dr Gilberto de Lima Lopes is a Consultant in Medical Oncology and the Assistant Director for Clinical Research at the Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre in Singapore, and an Assistant Professor of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.
After obtaining his medical degree in Brazil, Dr. Lopes undertook an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Jackson Memorial Hospital of the University of Miami in Florida, USA, and became Chief Medical Resident and Clinical Instructor at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Lopes’ has presented and/or published more than 80 abstracts, book chapters, review articles and original papers in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, Pharmacotherapy and Health Affairs.
In addition to delivering lectures around the world, Dr de Lima Lopes has been Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on more than 60 phase I, II, and III clinical trials covering breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and thoracic cancers. Besides drug development his other main areas of interest are health economics and access to cancer drugs.
As an active member of the oncological community, Dr. Lopes has been an Invited Reviewer for Cancer, The Journal of Thoracic Oncology, The Breast, Pharmacotherapy, The American Society of Clinical Oncology – Self Evaluation Program, Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology; and a member of the Editorial Board for The Open Colorectal Cancer Journal.
Akhil Chopra, M.D.

Dr. Akhil Chopra joins the Johns Hopkins international medical center in Singapore, from the Drexel University College of Medicine/ Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was Assistant Professor in Hematology and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Chopra finished his training in Internal Medicine from the Reading Hospital and Medical Center and completed his fellowship training from Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. He is American board certified in Internal Medicine as well as in Hematology/Medical oncology. Dr. Chopra has a strong interest in malignant hematology including lymphomas and B-cell malignancies as well as in thoracic and gastrointestinal malignancies.
