Johns Hopkins Medicine: A Tradition of Discovery
A leader in medicine since its founding in 1889, Johns Hopkins has strived to create an environment in which the quest for new knowledge yields more effective and compassionate care for all.
Today, Johns Hopkins Medicine is a vast, non-profit healthcare enterprise, ever growing and evolving as it fulfills its mission of advancing the best in patient care, medical research and education.
The centerpiece for patient care is the 1000-bed Johns Hopkins Hospital, consistently ranked the #1 hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report in its annual survey of the Best Hospitals in America.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital is part of a health system that includes two other acute-care hospitals, three ambulatory care centers and other programs to meet patients’ needs along the continuum of care. More than 2,000 physicians work at the medical campus in Baltimore, supported by 20,000 nurses and technicians. Each year, these professionals handle 70,000 inpatient cases and 1.5 million outpatient encounters in 16 specialties.
