Surgery

Welcome to Our Department

 Freischlag158
Julie Freischlag, M.D., Surgeon-in-Chief at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  A vascular surgeon, Dr. Freischlag specializes in the difficult-to-diagnose thoracic outlet syndrome.

Johns Hopkins surgeons have been at the forefront in pioneering operations such as congenital heart surgery, nerve-sparing prostate removal and minimally invasive surgery for kidney donation.

The Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world.  It is well-known for excellent care of patients, strong training of students and residents, and innovations in research.

Globally, the vision for the Department of Surgery is to maintain its position as the premier place where patients want to receive their care.

The Department of Surgery provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment for adult and pediatric patients with surgical problems, including gastrointestinal, oncologic, endocrine, vascular, pulmonary and cardiac diseases. We also offer heart, lung, kidney, pancreatic and liver transplantation as well as a range of plastic and cosmetic surgery services.  Our faculty are highly interested in developing new, minimally invasive procedures to more quickly rehabilitate patients.

Our Specialists

About 75 surgeons practice in the Department and are at the forefront of research trying to find new and better ways to help patients with a wide variety of conditions.  Major departments include neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and  urology.  We also staff divisions of breast surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, critical care/trauma surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, surgical oncology/endocrinology, transplant surgery, and thoracic surgery.
